Yarn Weights, Fibers and Gauge
In this class we’ll play with some different types of yarn and discuss how to choose the right yarn for your project. We’ll review what it means when they call for “fingering” or “worsted” weight, and why two yarns with the same stated gauge might not behave the same way in a project. We’ll talk about different types of fiber and how they behave in a garment, and how to safely substitute yarn when you can’t use the one the pattern calls for. We’ll have samples of some different yarns available and we’ll take some time to swatch with them and see how they feel.
Materials required: a few different sizes of knitting needles to play with the yarn – bring some from home in two or three different sizes between 1 and 9. Straights, circulars or double points – it doesn’t matter.
